In this beginner guitar lesson, you will learn how to play the G major chord. Like other open chords, the G is a widely used chord in all styles of music, from classical to modern rock and pop so it is extremely useful to know when playing the guitar.
As always - try to pick the strings one by one to make sure there is not buzz of muted strings and practice the shape of the chord until you feel comfortable with it. As you may already know, the hardest part is changing between chords so once you feel comfortable playing the G chord it is highly recommended to try and play some changes.
Here are some examples for you to try out:
- G to E
- G to A
- G to C
- G to D
You will notice that when playing some of those changes it is easier to play the first shape and for others it is easier to play the second shape. That is why it is recommended to learn to play the G chord both ways.
